To this day, it remains a cold case with our local police department. I am sure you can surmise that the mere mention of Roberta’s name brings tingles to the flesh of anyone that knew her.

Twelve years after she vanished, human remains were discovered in the remote pine barrens around Tallow Creek, an area southeast of town. It was in the autumn, I recall. Some unfortunate deer hunter ducked into the trees to relieve himself, and ended up stumbling on some old bones.

The poor guy. Can you just imagine his surprise when a pile of what was supposed to be broken limbs and branches smiled back at him?

Officials determined that the body belonged to a woman, but it had been so battered, so ravaged by time and wild animals, no positive identification could be made. Speculation ran rampant throughout Canyon County about the dead person’s identity. Any woman that had ever gone missing was brought up as a possibility. As you might guess, Roberta Johnson’s name has frequently come up in conversation, but alas, Mr. Martin, the notion that the body was hers remains unconfirmed.

Wishful thinking, I have heard it said. We all want the end of a life to make sense somehow. We want it to fit into our ideas of order, but that, unfortunately, is not always possible.

People disappear. Sometimes what comes in the end is just that simple. What remains in their stead is but a grim shadow.

This, I’m afraid, seems especially true around here.
